Adorned with Rich Embroidery
After witnessing the Bareback Horses at Plaza del Hoyo on May 1st, another key element of the Wine Horses Festival on May 2nd is the mantle.
The mantle consists of various pieces used to dress the horse, luxuriously embroidered with silk and threads of silver and gold. These true works of art are available for close observation during this night, as the frenzy and festivities of the following day generally make it difficult to appreciate the details of these creations.
Throughout the city, in various venues, horse clubs set up exhibitions showcasing a year’s work. These can be visited from around 8 PM to midnight. Locals and visitors stroll through the city to enjoy these displays and judge the mantles of each club based on their criteria. In gatherings of friends, everyone has their favorite and places bets on who will come first the next day.
Having observed the different elements of the Wine Horses separately—horse and mantle—it will be the next day, when we see how the horses are dressed and how each mantle enhances the animal, that we can truly assess who deserves to be among the best adorned.
Key Information The mantles are displayed throughout the city in various venues, although the largest concentration is around Gran Vía and adjacent streets. The same attire worn in the afternoon is typically kept, though it is common to wear a chilaba, typical of the Moorish kabilas, or similar, to stay warm.
