Wine and Flower Blessing Ceremony

The Festival of the Wine Horses in Caravaca features a profound ritual: the Blessing of Wine and Flowers. This ceremony overlaps with the Horse Race but can be attended in sequence—first the blessing, then the race. Held at the Basilica Sanctuary, the mayor presents a tray of flowers to the Cross, followed by the chaplain blessing the wine. The Cross is dipped three times, sprinkling the flowers with the blessed wine, which includes the wine historically carried up by horse and the flowers offered by the people of Caravaca. Attendees then collect the blessed flowers, symbolizing their connection to the holy Cross. Outside the castle walls, the energy contrasts with shouts from the crowd cheering on the racing horses. This event beautifully combines solemn rituals with the fervent spirit of the race.
